Captain John George Overmire:
His Ongoing Legacy 1590-2024
Including New Revelations of the Overmyer Family Origins in Upper Austria
by Laurence Overmire
FAQ
Does Captain John George Overmire include every member of every generation descended from the immigrant?
Unfortunately, no. With an estimated 80,000-100,000+ individuals in the Overmyer family tree, such a book would be prohibitive to produce. For those whose family members who were not included in this book or the 2009 book One Immigrant’s Legacy, author Laurence Overmire has spent countless hours linking the generations from all branches of the tree on Find a Grave. If you go to findagrave.com, you may find more information about your deceased family members and how they descend from Capt. Overmire (living people are not included).
Does this book update and correct the 1905 Overmyer History and Genealogy by Barnhart B. and John C. Overmyer?
Yes. The 1905 authors did a remarkable job with their history, but not surprisingly many mistakes have been found in the ensuing years. This book corrects many of those errors.
Who is included in the book?
The book includes over 1,800 biographies, short sketches, and family stories of notable individuals both living and dead from all branches of the family tree. The immigrant Captain Overmire, his parents, his two wives, his children and his grandchildren are among these. The book is divided into chapters according to each of the immigrant Capt. Overmire’s children. For example, John George Jr. and his descendants are in all in one chapter as are each of the Captain’s other children: Catherine (Parkison), Eve (Harpster), John Peter, Mary Magdalena (Witmer), Philip, John Michael, David, Barbara (Rearick) and Jacob.
Does this book include only those who spell the name “Overmyer” or are there other variations of the surname included also?
Today, our family tree includes five spelling variations: Overmire, Overmier, Overmyer, Overmeyer, and Overmoyer. Representatives of all of these lines are included in the book. The history of the spelling changes over time are also discussed to give you an understanding of why there are so many variations.
Does the book include only those with the surname Overmyer, etc. or are the female lines with their husbands’ surnames represented as well?
The book includes descendants from all the major branches of the tree, the female lines as well, not just those who bear the surname Overmyer and its variations.
I heard the book honors the military veterans in the family. Is that true?
Yes. Although, there are far too many military veterans in the family tree to include them all, you will find many of them in this book and in One Immigrant’s Legacy with short biographical sketches for each. There is also a special IN MEMORIAM section listing 122 descendants who gave their lives in service.
Are modern-day family researchers included in this book as well?
Yes, some family researchers who answered our queries for information, stories, photographs etc. have biographical sketches, so you will be able to get to know a little bit about the people who are currently doing research and perhaps you can help one another with your family mysteries.
Is Captain John George Overmire substantially different from the 2009 volume of family history One Immigrant’s Legacy?
Yes, Capt. John George Overmire updates the previous book and presents 15 years of additional research on the Overmyer family, including more information about Capt. Overmire, his children and his ancestors, and new revelations about the Overmyer family origins in Upper Austria. The two books complement one another. Both are worthy family heirlooms to include in your family library.
