Assistant director for research at the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs, Western Illinois University (WIU). He is a regular contributor to the Daily Yonder and works with the WIU Prairie Lands Environmental Summit and the Sustainability Brownbagger Series. He also is chair of the Prairie Land Conservancy board of directors. Most of his research work focuses on the early twentieth century roots of rural community development, especially from 1900 to the mid 1940s.
