FAQ
Is this a genealogy book that includes every member of every generation descended from the immigrant?
No. With tens of thousands of descendants at this point in time, such a book would be prohibitive to produce. That information, however, is easily available online. I am keeping track of all the descendants and people can submit updates or corrections on their branch of the family at any time. See “The Overmire Ancestry: Descendants of Revolutionary War Veteran, Capt. George Overmire,” by Larry Overmire, RootsWeb World Connect Project, 2000-2009.
Does this book update and correct the 1905 Overmyer History and Genealogy by Barnhart B. and John C. Overmyer?
Yes. The 1905 authors did a remarkable job with their history, but not surprisingly mistakes have been found in the ensuing years. This book corrects those errors including some significant ones in the family of John George Jr.
Who is included in the book?
The book includes over 1000 biographies, short sketches, and family anecdotes of notable individuals both living and dead from all branches of the family tree. The immigrant Captain Overmire, his parents, his two wives, his children and his grandchildren are among these. The book is divided into chapters according to each of the immigrant Capt. Overmire’s children. For example, John George Jr. and his descendants are in all in one chapter as are each of the Captain’s other children: Catherine (Parkison), John Peter, Mary Magdalena (Witmer), Philip, John Michael, David, and Jacob.
Does this book include only those who spell the name “Overmyer” or are there other variations of the surname included also?
Today, our family tree includes five spelling variations: Overmire, Overmier, Overmyer, Overmeyer, and Overmoyer. Representatives of all of these lines are included in the book. The history of the spelling changes over time are also discussed to give you an understanding of why there are so many variations.
Does the book include only Overmyer descendants or are the female lines represented as well?
The book includes descendantsfrom all the major branches of the tree, the female lines as well, not just those who bear the surname Overmyer.
I heard the book honors the military veterans in the family. Is that true?
Yes, I found as many of the military veterans as I could and included short biographical sketches for each. Some biographies are more detailed. There is also a special IN MEMORIAM section listing all those descendants known to have sacrificed their lives in service.
Are modern-day family researchers included in this book as well?
Yes, the family researchers who answered my queries for information, stories, photographs etc. have biographical sketches, so you will be able to get to know a little bit about the people who are currently doing research and perhaps help one another with your family issues. Unfortunately, those who did not respond to my requests for information, or whom I was otherwise unable to contact, are most likely not included. |
