About the book
CAPTAIN JOHN GEORGE OVERMIRE: HIS ONGOING LEGACY, 1590-2024 is a second volume of fascinating Overmyer family history by genealogist and historian Laurence Overmire. This book is filled with 15 years of new research and family stories that have been uncovered since Overmire’s first volume One Immigrant’s Legacy was published in 2009.
In this exciting new book, you will meet a German cousin of ours, a descendant of Capt. Overmire’s sister Catherine, who still lives in Germany. Together he and Laurence investigated the German church records and history books to discover that our earliest Obermayer ancestors lived in Upper Austria going as far back as 1590 before migrating to Germany. Laurence also discovered a heretofore totally lost line of one of the Captain’s daughters. As it turns out, she married a son of one of the Captain’s comrades in his company of Frontier Rangers. Other family mysteries that have puzzled researchers for many, many years have finally been solved making it possible for many more Americans to discover their Overmire heritage.
Patriotic military service has been one of the hallmarks of Capt. Overmire’s legacy. This book honors many more military veterans who did not appear in One Immigrant’s Legacy and features an “In Memoriam” section to remember the sacrifice of 122 of the Captain’s descendants who gave their lives in service.
In these pages you will also meet many more notable descendants of the Captain from states all over the country who have achieved remarkable things in their lives. You will learn how the spelling of the surname changed over time among the various branches of the tree, from the German Obermayer and Obermeyer to the anglicized Overmire, Overmier, Overmyer, Overmeyer and Overmoyer.
Those who attended the 2009 Overmyer National Family Reunion, and those who were unable, will especially enjoy the section of the book that memorializes that 3-day event creating so many fond memories shared amongst our cousins.
Genealogists and family researchers will appreciate the 36 pages of notes and sources to aid them in further investigations in the family tree. Plus, you will read about many of the modern-day researchers who are currently involved in the family genealogy.
In short, this invaluable book of family history is a real family heirloom that you will be proud to pass down to your own families for the generations to come.
